The Global Citizen

As the student enters senior year, he or she undergoes a profound transformation- from the life and expectations of an adolescent to that of a citizen. This student is suddenly confronted with the responsibility of being an informed voter, applying to and selecting a college, and participating in the adult world. The adolescent's reality expands to include a more tangible national and global awareness, and the student begins to imagine his or her place in the world with more haste and excitement than ever before.

The Senior Institute

The Sage curriculum responds to this expanding consciousness by dedicating a special year to these young adults. The Senior Institute, while still in the works, offers students the opportunity to delve into independent work more deeply, to further explore their roles in the adult community, and to understand the responsibilities of a truly global citizen. The funds these students raised in the 10th and 11th grades are put towards a trip abroad, in which students are immersed in language, culture, service, and concerns (humanitarian, environmental and economic) with both international and local implications.

From the explorer's wonder, to the social animal's concern with justice, to the local apprentice's search for self, to the global citizen's desire to affect change, this culminating application of the students' growth allows them to make an impact on an international and highly meaningful level. These lasting experiences bring the Global Citizen full circle within the mission of The Sage School: To create an intensive, experiential learning environment for adolescents that is committed to educational excellence and the development of self-awareness through community action, and humanitarian and ecological responsibility.
